Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla founder and chairman of the Serum Institute of India (SII), was honoured with a lifetime achievement award by Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) at the inaugural function of the 'Biology Beyond Borders' conference held at the University. The award was presented to Dr. Poonawalla by Dr. Suresh Gosavi, the Vice-Chancellor of SPPU.
Also present at the function were Serum Institute Of India CEO, Adar Poonawalla and Dr. Soumya Swaminathan former chief scientist of the World Health Organisation (WHO). Speaking at the award ceremony Dr. Poonawalla highlighted the importance of direct communication with the health ministry of India, which played a pivotal role during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic. The direct line of communication enabled SII to expedite the launch of the Covid-19 vaccine that has saved millions of lives.
During the event, SII CEO Adar Poonawalla emphasised the company's commitment to innovation. He discussed the significance of leveraging technologies such as AI and quantum simulation in developing theoretical approaches to combatting new viruses and bacteria, thereby underlining SII's dedication to advancing healthcare solutions.
